How to invite a contact you don’t know to your LinkedIn network

What do you do with an invitation you receive on LinkedIn from someone you don’t know ? Someone who just sends the standard message from LinkedIn and doesn’t even make the effort of explaining why they would like to be connected with you … ?

My husband asked me recently: “why do they want to be connected to me if they don’t know me and they don’t even tell me why I should connect to them?”

There are two possible answers to this:

  1. They are just trying to increase the numbers of their network. So they definitely deserve to be deleted right away.
  2. They don’t know how easy it is to personalize the default message in LinkedIn and give some explanation about the reasons why I should not delete the invite but accept to be connected with this person.

I shot a short screencast to show you how easy it is to personalize the message when you invite someone on LinkedIn to be connected to your network:

I hope this has been helpful. As you can see I’m now experimenting with video. Still camera shy, but at least you get to hear my voice
